Patent Gold Patent gold leaf, also referred to as transfer leaf, is gold leaf mounted to special tissue paper by a pressure process. A book of patent gold leaf is assembled by placing each unit of gold leaf and tissue paper between pieces of thin rouged paper. The gilder can then remove one leaf at a time without disturbing the remaining leaves.
Double Gold Double gold does not mean that the leaf is two times thicker than regular leaf. Double leaf may be only 10% to 20% thicker than regular gold leaf. Double means that it is a heavier gram weight per 1000 leaves than standard gold at the same karat level.
Glass Gold This term applies to gold leaf which is selected for it's higher quality having fewer pinholes and irregularities.

European 22kt Gold Leaf
Experience exceptional quality with our 22.00 karat gold leaf, composed of 91.8% pure gold. Each book contains 25 leaves, each measuring 3 3/8" x 3 3/8" (85mm), covering approximately 1.7 square feet. Available in a variety of gram weights, this gold leaf is beaten to a precise thickness of 0.5 microns. European leaf is denser and firmer than lower-weight alternatives, making it easier to handle and less prone to tearing or wrinkling in your final gilded surface.
Chinese 22kt Gold Leaf
This version is made of 91.8% gold, 7.2% silver, and 1.0% copper. Each book contains 25 leaves, sized 3 1/8" x 3 1/8" (80mm), with an approximate coverage of 1.5 square feet. Chinese gold leaf is a cost-effective option but may be more delicate than European leaf due to its slightly lower density.
Loose Gold Leaf
Loose leaf gold is ideal for traditional water gilding and precision work. Each leaf is separated by thin rouged paper, allowing individual removal using a gilder’s tip—a flat, natural-hair brush designed specifically for this purpose.
Patent Gold Leaf
Patent or transfer gold leaf is adhered to a special tissue backing for easy handling—perfect for outdoor gilding or where loose leaf is impractical. Simply press the leaf onto your prepared surface and remove the backing. No gilder’s tip required.
Note: Patent gold is not suitable for water gilding and works best on flat surfaces.
Patent Gold Storage Tips
Patent gold is sensitive to temperature and humidity. Store in 80% humidity, wrapped in plastic, to maintain the bond between gold and tissue. If the leaf separates from the tissue, rehydrate under pressure. If stored in excess heat and moisture, the leaf may stick too tightly—move it to a refrigerator or a cool, dry place to restore usability.
Applications and Finish
Use gold leaf to enhance wood, stone, fiberglass, or metal with the brilliance and depth of real gold. Selecting the appropriate karat, leaf type, and thickness ensures a long-lasting, elegant finish.
Double Gold
“Double” gold refers to leaf that is 10–20% heavier in gram weight than standard leaf—not twice as thick. This increased density makes it more durable and easier to apply.
Glass Gold
Glass gold is hand-selected for minimal pinholes and surface flaws, making it the ideal choice for glass gilding projects like verre églomisé, mirrors, and fine decorative applications.
