6.00 karat White Gold leaf contains approximately 25% pure gold. Each book includes 25 leaves, with each leaf measuring 3 3/8" × 3 3/8". One book provides an approximate coverage of 1.7 square feet.

We offer this gold leaf in a range of gram weights to accommodate different project needs. Gram weight refers to the total weight of 1,000 leaves of standard 3 3/8" square leaf and is a measure of leaf density, not thickness. All gold leaf—whether European or Chinese—is beaten to a consistent thickness of approximately 0.5 microns.

What varies between manufacturers is the gold content per leaf. For example, a Chinese 12 kt gold leaf typically weighs about 13 grams per 1,000 leaves, while an Italian (European) equivalent weighs closer to 16 grams. The higher gram weight results in a denser, firmer leaf that is generally easier to handle, less prone to tearing, and may exhibit fewer wrinkles in the finished surface—depending on the gilding technique used.

Loose Gold — Loose gold leaf books are assembled by placing each leaf between sheets of thin, lightly rouged paper. This allows the gilder to remove individual leaves without disturbing the rest of the book. Loose leaf is traditionally lifted using a gilder’s tip, a flat brush made from natural hair.

Patent Gold (Transfer Leaf) — Patent gold leaf, also known as transfer leaf, is gold leaf mounted to a special tissue paper using a pressure process. Each unit of leaf and tissue is interleaved with thin rouged paper, allowing for easy removal of individual sheets. Transfer leaf offers added control, making it ideal for handling larger areas or working in challenging conditions.
